Juju & Jordash - Blue plates EP
Real Soon Recordings

The Wire/January 2007
Review by Philip Sherburne

"London label Real Soon just keeps getting better. From its origins in loosely Detroit- and Chicago-
flavoured House music, it is branching out into ever more esoteric records that can't be pinned to any
particular style, past or present. At a moment when by-the-numbers club bangers are causing exhaustion
even among dance music fans, each successive Real Soon release stands as a gentle reminder that
there are still more sounds, rhythms and– most importantly –tempos worth exploring.
If you told me these two cuts dated from 1982 I'd believe you, though mercifully there's nothing to
date them as old or new, retro or futurist.
While plenty of new disco has dedicated itself to the sub-110bpm range, the likes of Lindstrom
have never attempted something as deliberately turgid as "Blue Plates", which grinds out a
heavily reverbed rhythm forged of 808 toms, hypnotically swirling handclap patterns and an Industrial
strength snare. In the background, unctuous bass and noxious pads do their best to drag down
weirdly sprightly keys and blips.
On the B side, an up-and-down arpeggio and a lumbering shaker rhythm circle each other like wary
adversaries while walking bass and jazz keys set up a lounge atmosphere for a world that's uneasy
to the core."

"A great moment to check in with the rising london label Real Soon. Observers may recall their
reissue of Carl Craig's Ultramarine mixes some 3 years back. This is simply one of those great records
which will not age badly, a rare commodity in these times of straight ahead thumpers. There's a
veritable cavern of reverb, intoxicating handclaps dressing a trundling rhythm which recalls classic
period eno-produced talking heads. Fearlessly slow and dubby like a boogie minded dystopian
disco version, this is deliberately machined and highly recommended groove from an unsuspected
source. Killer twelve. "

"London label Real Soon branches out even further with this release so much so that even the Wire
are raving about this release: " If you told me these two cuts dated from 1982 I’d believe you, though
mercifully there’s nothing to date them as old or new, retro or futurist. While plenty of new disco has
dedicated itself to the sub-110bpm range, the likes of Lindstrom have never attempted something as
deliberately turgid as “Blue Plates”, which grinds out a heavily reverbed rhythm forged of 808 toms,
hypnotically swirling handclap patterns and an Industrial strength snare. In the background,
unctuous bass and noxious pads do their best to drag down weirdly sprightly keys and blips.
On the B side, an up-and-down arpeggio and a lumbering shaker rhythm circle each other like wary
adversaries while walking bass and jazz keys set up a lounge atmosphere for a world that’s uneasy
to the core" (Philip Sherburn). Seriously, a few listens of this and you're hooked!"

Juju & Jordash - The Hush EP
Psychostasia Recordings

"Now here's something to be frenzied over.  A brand new release from the Reggie Dokes/Psychostasia
camp and yes, another incredibly fine EP of totally fresh, organic music that manages to defy categorization.
A trio of Parrish paced wonders awaits, kicking off with 'Hush' comprising off kiltered beats and fiendishly
abstract jazz meanderings.  Check 'Husheesh', an utter concoction of muted beat, 303 squelch, a totally
'out there' dropout, before the burbling acid bump kicks back in.  As if that wasn't enough excitement for one
EP, flip over for an extended Reggie Dokes & Scott Ferguson Remix and quite simply what has
to be one of the most beautifully moody pieces that may even put ol' KDJ to shame, drawing the listener
in with its subtly infectious spattering of bongo rhythms and incorporating one of the most haunting
saxophone riffs I've heard in a very long time.  RECORD OF THE MONTH! "

Theo Parrishの作品を思わせる図太く淡々としたトラックにズッポリ"ハメ"られる危険な楽曲!勿論、
Reggie Dokes本人も参加しています。
